Balance personal del 2008

Este es mi balance personal del 2008. Como es usual, se trata de una lista que escoge parcialmente lo que llega a mis manos bajo las vías más clásicas de la cinefilia y a través de grupos como Tik o KG. Gracias a ellos, puedo acceder a películas que de otra manera no podría ver porque jamás llegan o tendría que soportar la pésima proyección de algunas mal llamadas salas de cine club, que no ofrecen otra cosa que una mala proyección de video digital.

Perdiendo el tiempo

Ian Curtis no se merecía un biopic tan soso como el perpretado por Anton Corjbin. Salvo la estupenda fotografía y la siempre agradable presencia de Samantha Morton, la película no pasa de ser otra historia que perpetúa el ideal romántico del artista atormentado tan propio de la cultura popular.

El cine asiático apuesta por las grandes fantasías de acción con tintes melodramáticos y nacionalistas al estilo de "Héroe" de Zhang Yimou. Este año, he logrado ver dos fallidas películas que tratan de alcanzar este ideal, colocando a las estrellas más rentables de Asia como Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro o Andy Lau. Sin embargo, ni The Warlords (Chan) o Red Cliff (John Woo) no logran pasar de la medianía y están filmadas bajo un estilo rimbombante que recuerda al peor Hollywood.

Aunque tiene momentos de cierta intensidad y una historia es sólida y bien narrada, "Stop Loss" hace extrañar a la serena sencillez de la opera prima de Kimberly Peirce. "Dream" de Kim Ki-duk

Logros parciales
"Cloverfield" de Matt Reeves es una buena película de monstruos, filmada con "bravura" bajo un estilo testimonial simulando una hand-held cacera. Las convenciones del género funcionan perfectamente, el suspenso y los efectos visuales aunque se extraña cierta calidez en la interpretación de los personajes.

"Atonement" de Joe Wright fue una gran sorpresa. Cuando se espera el típico drama de "qualité" que tanto emociona a la Academia, aparece esta película bien construida, con unos planos secuencia espctaculares y con un estupendo reparto, a pesar de Keira Knightley.

"We Own the Night" de James Gray es una buena película que está a medio camino entre el género y el cine de autor.

"Liverpool". Formado por una serie de planos secuencias bien logrados, la última película de Lisandro Alonso tiende a confundir sencillez con vacío.

Otras películas con momentos de interés son "The Good, the Bad and the Weird", REC (con un par de secuencias muy buenas aunque por lo general confunde griterío con sensación de terror), Shaun of the Dead y Hamlet 2, que tiene un musical de antología dentro de una película por lo demás intrascendente.
